How I’d improve the reality show “Rock Star”

Last year, when INXS decided to replace Michael Hutchence by hosting a reality show and choosing the new singer a la “American Idol,” I was shocked.

I understand that a band wants to keep doing what they do and the dinosaurs of rock thing pays well. But I also tend to believe that bands should do the honorable thing when someone kicks (ha! puns! ha ha!): they should dissolve the band and start something new like the surviving members of The Minutemen did. Although, simply replacing the dead guy has worked out well for AC/DC and Red Hot Chili Peppers.

Maybe this means I’m torn. In any case, I know a way CBS can improve the show “Rock Star.”

Instead of assembling a super group like they are this season, they should put a list of, say, two hundred bands into a hopper. Even a hundred would be good. Just open up the All Music Guide and choose band names at random to make sure some current biggies as well as small bands get in the mix.

Then, for the season premiere, they give the ol’ hopper a spin with the singer of the selected band to be creatively whacked at the end of the show.

Better still, they could have the selection during the previous season’s finale and then make another reality show with the singer on the run and the hunt that ensues (maybe using The Rock, Ted Nugent and that Dog guy as the hunters). It’d be like “Survivor.” Except way more fun. They could call it “Rock Star: Hunted” or “Let’s Get the Singer!”

Of course, I’d want the show to be rigged to ensure it’s Dave Matthews Band or AFI or Dashboard Confessional that gets picked.
